Tail Coverage
Extended reporting coverage that protects against claims filed after a claims-made malpractice policy has ended.
Tail coverage is an extension that keeps a claims-made malpractice policy responsive to incidents that occurred while the policy was active but are reported after it terminates. Because a standard claims-made policy only pays when both the event and the claim fall within the coverage period, providers leaving a position or changing carriers often purchase tail coverage to close that exposure gap. Credentialing and risk teams confirm this protection when reviewing a provider's malpractice insurance history, and it may be reflected on a certificate of insurance.
