Taxonomy Code
A standardized HIPAA code that classifies a provider's specialty, type, and area of practice and is associated with their NPI.
A taxonomy code is a ten-character alphanumeric identifier from the standardized HIPAA provider taxonomy set that describes a clinician's or organization's specialty and provider type. It is reported alongside the NPI and stored in NPPES, and selecting the correct code matters because it influences claim routing and how payers categorize a provider. A single provider may carry more than one taxonomy when they practice in multiple specialties, with one designated as primary.
