NPPES
The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System is the CMS system that issues National Provider Identifiers and maintains the public provider record.
NPPES is the federal system run by CMS that assigns and stores every NPI and keeps a publicly searchable record of provider details such as name, taxonomy, and practice address. It enumerates both individual practitioners with a Type 1 NPI and organizations with a Type 2 NPI. Credentialing teams routinely check NPPES to confirm a provider's identifier and basic registration data.
